what is the valency of oxygen and why ?

valency of oxygen is 2 .. Oxygen is 8.so,electronic configuration of oxygen is 2,6.there is need to be atmost 2electrons are present in first shell of an atom .and in second shell there are 8 electrons are needed to form stable octate.but oxygen only have 6 electrons in 2nd shell.so,oxygen needs 2electrons to complete its octate

every element wants to become stable and as atomic no. of oxygen is 8 AND EC = 2,6 so it needs 2 electrons to attain it's stable state or to complete it's octect
