hlo mate ✌️

Valency of sulphur in H2S = 2

Valency of Sulphur in SO2 = +4

1 sulphur atom combines with 2 O atoms to give SO2.

Valency of sulphur in SO3 = +6

Hope it helps ❣️

Given :

H₂S, SO₂ and SO₃

To Find :

Valency of Sulphur in given compounds.

Solution :

(i) Valency of Sulphur in H₂S

Let the valency of Sulphur be 'x'

∴  2×(Valency of Hydrogen) + x = Charge present on the compound

⇒          2×1 + x                            =  0

⇒                x                               =  -2

Therefore, the valency of Sulphur in H₂S is -2

(ii) Valency of Sulphur in SO₂

Let the valency of Sulphur be 'x'

    x + 2×(valency of Oxygen) = 0

⇒  x + 2×(-2)                             = 0

⇒           x                                 = +4

Therefore, the valency of Sulphur in SO₂ is +4

(iii) Valency of Sulphur in SO₃

Let the valency of Sulphur be 'x'

   x + 3×(-2) = 0

⇒        x       =  + 6

Therefore, the valency of Sulphur in SO₃ is +6
