Answer:

the distance between two points is √10.

Given that, (X1,Y1)=(3,a) (X2,Y2)=(4,1)

the formula for distance between two points =

√(X2-X1)²+(Y2-Y1)².

√10=√(4-3)²+(1-a)²

both sides the roots are eliminated

10=(1)²+([1]²+[a]²-[2(1)(a)]

10=1+[1+a²-2a]

10=2+a²-2a

8=a²-2a

8+2a=a²

2a=a²-8

a=(a²-8)/2

therefore,a=(a²-8)/2
