★ RATIOS AND PROPORTION ★

COMPONENDO AND DIVIDENDO -

p / q = 4 : 1

p : q = 4 : 1

p : q + 1 = 4 : 1 + 1

Hence , (p + q) : q = (4 + 1): 1
Again , for above results ,

(p : q) - 1 : q = (4 : 1) - 1

(p - q) : q = (4 - 1) : 1

Now , combining both the above results ,

p + q / p - q = 4 + 1 / 4 - 1

= 5 / 3

Hi ,

p / q = 4 [ given ]

p = 4q -----( 1 )

Value of ( p + q ) / ( p - q )

= ( 4q + q ) / ( 4q - q ) [ from ( 1 ) ]

= 5q / 3q

= 5/3
