Answer:

Groundwater is water found under the Earth's surface in rock and soil pore spaces as well as rock formation fissures. Groundwater accounts for approximately 30% of all easily accessible freshwater on the planet. An aquifer is a unit of rock or an unconsolidated deposit that can generate usable amounts of water. The water table is the depth at which soil pore pores or cracks and holes in rock become totally saturated with water.

Groundwater is refilled from the surface; it may release spontaneously from the surface in springs and seeps, forming oases or wetlands. It is also often extracted for agricultural, municipal, and industrial purposes through the construction and operation of extraction wells. The investigation of the distribution and mobility of groundwater is hydrogeology, also called groundwater hydrology.

Characteristics of ground water are as follows-

  • Groundwater is fresh water found in the pore spaces of soil and rocks.
  • Water is also moving throughout aquifers under the water table.
  • It is occasionally helpful to distinguish between surface water-associated groundwater and deep groundwater in an aquifer (sometimes called "fossil water").
  • Groundwater is similar to surface water in terms of inputs, outputs, and storage.
  • Seepage from surface water is a natural inflow to groundwater.
  • Natural groundwater outflows include springs and seepage to the seas.
  • Groundwater storage is often substantially bigger (in volume) than surface water storage due to its sluggish rate of turnover.
