Deep sea currents are geostrophically balanced and driven. This means that they are driven by pressure gradients and the coriolis effect. The pressure gradients are due to differences in density caused by very minor temperature and salinity differences (0.1°C, 0.01‰ salinity). The best way to think about the causes of these currents is dynamic topography, “hills in the ocean”. Water runs downhill (a pressure gradient in water is analogous to a hill on land) and is deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere by coriolis. The balance between pressure and coriolis is called geostrophic and drives the largest currents on Earth.
