The duties of a defence tradesman mate are classified into two types – general duties and specified duties. The various trades for which an army tradesman is employed include steward, chef, housekeeper, mess keeper, steward and washerman to mention just a few.

Selection for this post in the Indian army is made through an examination called Indian Army Soldier Tradesman examination. The exam is usually held four times in a year.
