Newton's third law of motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
As a reaction to the fast ejection of exhaust fluids through the nozzle, an upward thrust is created. Thus thrust helps the rocket to propel upward.
Once propelled, it maintains its motion according to the law of conservation of momentum- the initial momentum= final momentum.
