When the fixed and moving studs of the screw gauge are brought in contact with each other without application of pressure, the zero of the circular scale must coincide with the reference line. If this does not happen, it is a zero error.
If the zero of the circular scale lies below the base line of the pitch scale, it is called positive zero error. On the other hand, if the zero of the circular scale lies above the base line of the pitch scale, it is called negative zero error.
