Usually a map focuses only on one aspect. Such maps are called thematic maps They can also be used to show different kinds of information like the nature of terrain (hilly, rock, plain,etc), economic activities of people, languages spoken, literacy etc.

Thematic Map:

  • It is a theme focuses on the area such as temperature variation, rainfall distribution, etc. These maps display the spatial distribution of a particular or more data themes for a selected geographical area. They can be qualitative or quantitative at the same time.
  • These maps are also termed as a single topic, special purposes or statistical maps. The two very important elements are – a base map and statistical data. They used to show statistical interpretation of qualitative or quantitative data of a specific geographical region.  
  • Example: Dot maps are common in Canada.
