Litmus paper is an acid/base indicator that changes color to identify bases and acids. Litmus is a dye made from naturally occurring substances, including liches (fungi)– the most commonly used of which is the species roccella tinctoria. These lichens are treated for several weeks in a mixture of urine, potash and lime, during which they ferment and change color. Plaster of Paris or chalk is added later, and the litmus is molded to form small cakes. Paper that is treated in litmus is called litmus paper, or litmus strips. These are used extensively in laboratories and educational institutions to check the acidity or alkalinity of a substance.

Litmus Paper
Litmus paper makes us observe the opportunity to assess a sample's pH.
Litmus paper is available in both red and blue varieties.
The natural color for litmus paper is blue. When put in an acidic solution the blue paper turns red.
Red litmus paper is first mixed with an acid when it is made. This causes the paper to appear red. When put in the presence of a base, the paper returns to its natural blue color.
The term 'litmus' came from an Old word meaning "to dye or color." Litmus paper, as its name implies, is primarily composed of paper.
Some raw materials used for making litmus paper are :
Wood cellulose, lichens..(However, some varieties of lichens are becoming extinct.) , and adjunct compounds.
