Thermal runaway refers to a situation where an increase in temperature changes the conditions in a way that causes a further increase in temperature, often leading to a destructive result. It is a kind of uncontrolled positive feedback.

as the collector current increases the power is mostly dissipated in the collector region. The increased temperature gives rise to an increase in the flow of minority carriers from collector to base region further increasing the Collector current. This action of increase in current and further increase in temperature eventually destroys the transistor. This is known as thermal runaway.
