Thermite process is a reduction of metal oxide with highly reactive metal like sodium and aluminium. These reactions are highly exothermic. Iron oxide when reacted with aluminium gives iron and aluminium oxide and large amount of heat which meltsthe metal which is reduced.

For example, a copper thermite reaction using copper oxide andelemental aluminium can be used for creating electric joints in a processcalled cadwelding, that produces elemental copper (it may react violently):

3 CuO + 2 Al → 3 Cu + Al2O.
