firstly it is not thermic it is thermite the reduction of metal oxide with highly reactive metal like sodium and aluminium. those reaction are highly exothermic.

for eg..when iron oxide reacted with aluminium gives iron and aluminium oxide and large amount of heat which is used to joining railway tracks .
