The reaction, also called the Goldschmidt process, is used forthermite welding, often used to join rail tracks. Thermites have also been usedin metal refining, disabling munitions, and in incendiary weapons. Somethermite-like mixtures are used as pyrotechnic initiators in fireworks.

Thermit reaction is the reaction in which 3 parts of iron oxide (Fe3O4) and one part of aluminium is taken and ignited by burning magnesium and barium peroxide. Aluminium is a reducing agent so it reduces iron oxide to molten iron. The iron obtained is molten because temperature reaches 3000C. This molten iron is used to join broken parts of metals like broken rails.

Reaction is:
Fe2O3 + 2Al -------> 2Fe + Al2O3

This reaction proves the reducing property of aluminium.
