Thermite welding :

\large{Thermite\:welding} is a welding process which is widely used in joining materials permanently with molten metals. This process is also used in welding railway tracks.

• Also known as thermit reaction, it is an highly exothermic and displacement reaction.

• During this process, a mixture of oxygen and ethyne is burnt and not the mixture of ethyne and air as ethyne is an unsaturated hydrocarbon which when burns in air with a sooty flame due to incomplete combustion.

• The oxy-acetylene flame produces a very high temperature and is extremely hot enough for welding metals.

• Mainly the highly exothermic reaction of iron(III) oxide and aluminium metal take place in this process.
