The act of fusion is called as fertilisation process.

Explanation:

  • A sexual reproduction takes place by three stages namely pre-fertilisation, fertilisation and post-fertilisation process.
  • Pre-fertilisation process: In this stage, the gametes are formed and transfer of gametes takes place. The formation of gamete is called gametogenesis through mitotic cell division.
  • Fertilisation process: After the male gamete reaches the female gamete, there is fusion of both the gametes. During this process, two haploid cells are fused.
  • Post-fertilisation process: As result of fertilisation, zygote is formed. The zygote is diploid in nature and it is formed into embryo.
