What is thought to be at the centre of a quasar, from which nothing can escape – not even light?

A black hole... There are very few energy sources that have all the energy needed to power a quasar. Therefore, the possible source that best fits the properties observed of a quasar is a super massive black hole since a black hole is a region of space from which nothing can escape not even light.
