A force is a push or pull on an object. Picture pushing open a door or pulling the door closed. Both are forces on the door. Thrust is the force that pushes aircraft forward or upwards.

Force is the rate of change of momentum,as defined by Newton’s second law.

Now imagine that you are trying to change the momentum of a box i.e. apply a force on it. We can define pressure as the force by area. Here pressure is a scalar. So you get

p • A= F. But both F and A are vectors, where A’s direction is along the normal to the surface. So since a scalar is being multiplied with a vector, the direction of the new vector should be the same. Therefore the force that causes pressure should be applied normally to the surface. Alternatively, only the component normal to a surface can exert pressure.

We call this component thrust.

Hope it helped.
