Thunder is caused by lightning. When a lightning bolt travels from the cloud to the ground it actually opens up a little hole in the air, called a channel. Once then light is gone the air collapses back in and creates a sound wave that we hear as thunder.

It's created when the lightning strikes from cloud to cloud (or cloud to ground) . When the lightning is created it reaches a temperature of 30,000°C.

This temperature causes the gas near the lightning expand violently fast,and when the temperature decreases the gases contract even faster, this causes the booming sound known as thunder

Note: Lightning and thunder are different.Lightning is the electrical discharge and Thunder is the violent booming sound
