Thyroid gland is an organ present in our neck.  It is butterfly shaped and is in the cartilage of the larynx.  Thyroid is present in all vertebrates.  It moves a lot when we swallow food, because it is attached quite well with the larynx.  It consists of two lobes connected by Isthmus.

Thyroid produces T3 and T4 hormones.  These control how the other hormones are produced.  The gland monitors the speed of consumption of energy by our actions, and the pace of production of proteins in our body.  T4, also called "thyroxine", plays important role in the metabolism and in our growth. T3 is also called "tri iodo thyronine".

The issuing of hormones by thyroid is controlled by the hormone TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) from the anterior pituitary gland.
