Time is a physical or metaphysical variable expressing linear or sometimes recursive motion of the whole system.

For example, a 3-d metaphysics might not observe 1-d and 2-d motions, but only see results within the 3-d.

A 4-d universe might not see its source in the 3-d, but only 4-d motions such as 'complete processes', permanent things that are created and destroyed, or god-like properties that are accepted or rejected emotionally, or through some sort of higher-dimensional critical process.

In the 4-d we get virtual time, which is different from the real-time we see in the 3rd dimension.

There are two degrees of perspective, so that the immortal self can often withdraw from the manifestation of dimensions which in the 3-d would imply total death, but in the 4-d implies transformation, invisibility, time-travel, permanence, etc.

Confusingly, existential or phenomenological time is different from conceptual time. The result is that there is no objective time, except through interpretation or incoherent standards.

From our perspective, time is history, but for larger bodies, time is more like heat loss. If there is no heat loss, or no history, then we get immortal time. It is possible to have time perception even of immortal things, which is also confusing.

Sometimes time is a form of perception enmattered in impatient, evolving organisms. These organisms may reject the whole universe repeatedly as a shortcut to rejecting aspects of their own existence.

Scientists simplify time by calling it the 4th dimension or the extension of the 3-d. But, in fact, it is a variable that can just as easily exist for the 2-d or 1-d.
