A tissue is a group of similar cells that together serve a specific function in the body. The word tissue comes from the word “tisser”, meaning something woven, just like the cells are “woven” together in clumps and are made of layers.
There are 4 main types of animal tissue, and those are:
1: Epithelial tissue. This type of tissue is found in the surface of skin, the reproductive tract, the airways and the inner linings of the digestive tract.
Epithelial tissue is the only tissue that is in direct contact to the outer world mainly via the skin.
Its main functions are:
protection from the outside environment
Absorption of water and other nutrients
Elimination of waste
Secretion of enzymes and hormones in the form of glands
They are classified by the number of layers of cells they have: simple(one layer of cells) and stratified(multiple layers of cells). Although cilia and other cellular features might be taken into consideration when classifying them.
Some kinds of epithelium are:
Simple squamous epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Glandular epithelium
2: Nervous tissue. Cells comprising the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system are considered neural tissue.
We have some types of cells that make up the neural tissue like:
Astrocytes
Microglial cells
Oligodendrocytes
Schwann cells
The main function of this type of tissue is the communication between the central nervous system with the peripheral nervous system.
3: Muscle tissue. It is a soft tissue that composes muscles in animal bodies.
It is classifed in three main types, which are:
Skeletal muscle
Cardiac muscle
Smooth muscle
Its main function is to make movement and motion of the body possible.
4: Connective tissue. It is the tissue that connects the other types of tissues. It is made up of cells separated by non-living matter that is called the extracellular matrix.
It is made up of 3 types of fibers:
Collagenous fibers
Elastic fibers
Reticular fibers
