Tissues :A group of cells similar in structure that work together to perform a particular function forms a tissue.

Plants are stationary they do not move from one place to place in the search of their food. They do not consume or need much energy so most of the tissues of plants are supportive which provide them the structural strength. In plants growth tissues are MERISTEMATIC tissues.

The cells of meristematic tissues divide continuously and help in increasing the length and girth of the plant.meristematic tissues are found in the regions of the plant that grow because they are growth tissues.Meristematic tissues are of three types : APICAL, LATERAL and INTERCALARY.

1.APICAL MERISTEM :  They are situated at the growing tips of stems(shoot apex)  and roots (root apex) . They are also found at the apices of the leaves.Apical Meristem brings about elongation of the root and stem. It results in increase in the height of the plant which is called primary growth.

2. LATERAL MERISTEM : These tissues are found Beneath The bark called cork cambium and in vascular bundles of dicot roots and stems called cambium.Cambium is the region which is responsible for the growth in thickness.Lateral Meristem causes the stem or root to increase in diameter and girth .This is called secondary growth.

3. INTERCALARY MERISTEMS : these are located at the base of leaves or internodes for e.g - stems of grasses and other monocots.Intercalary Meristem produces an increase of length of organ.
