  • Freely movable structure made up of muscles.
  • It is attacked to oral cavity by frenulum.
  • It has the presence of taste buds.
  • Anterior part is free whereas the posterior part is connected to hyoid bone.
  • It can be dorsally divided into two parts by V shaped suculus terminalis.
  • The mid part of the V shaped suculus terminalis is foramen caecum.
  • The two parts are unequal - 1/3 is the pharyngeal part whereas 2/3 is pharyngeal or the oral part.
  • The taste buds afe found in the oral part on the papillae which are the small projections on the tongue.
  • The three types of papillae include the fungiform, filliform and the circumvallate.
  • The fungiform isbsmall spherical pink coloured, mostly found on anterior part attached by small pedicel.
  • The filliform are white thread like conical shaped. Found on entire surface and numerically high, but doesn't have taste buds.
  • Circumvallate is largest and least in number. Spehrical in shape they are found near the suculs terminalis.
  • At the pharyngeal part of the tongue, we have small lymph nodes called the lingual tonsils.
