What is topsoil ? Explain.

It is also called topsoil or horizon A, which is rich in organic material. This layer consists of decomposed material and organic matter. This is the reason, the topsoil has dark brown color. The humus makes the topsoil soft, porous to hold enough air and water. In this layer, the seeds germinate and roots of the plants grow.

  • Topsoil is the upper, outermost layer of soil, usually the top 5–10 inches (13–25 cm). It has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms and is where most of the Earth's biological soil activity occurs. Topsoil is composed of mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air.
