when a Ray of light travelling in a denser medium is incident at the surface of a rarer medium at the angle of incidence greater than a critical angle for a given pair of media that is totally reflected back into the denser medium this phenomenon is called the total internal reflection

ESSENTIAL CONDITIONS.....

in total internal refraction the light ray must be travel from denser to rarer m eye medium.......

the angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle of the given media....

When a ray of light passing from a denser to a rarer medium is incident at an angle greater than the critical angle for the given pair of medium the ray of light is not refracted rather it is reflected back into the same medium. This is called total internal reflection.
