Hello.
When a ray of light travelling from a denser to rarer medium. and the angle of incidence formed is greater than the critical angle of the given media, and thus the ray is reflected back in the same medium. This phenomenon is know as total internal reflection.

when a ray of light travelling from denser to rarer medium in a way that the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle ,then the incident ray of light is totally reflected into the first medium.
this phenomenon in which light is totally thrown back into the first medium by the second medium is known as total internal reaction .
