Blood cell formation also called hematopoiesis or hemopoiesis continuous process by which is cellular constituents of blood are replenished as needed. Blood cells are divided into three groups : the red blood cells, white blood cells and blood platelets. The white blood cells are subdivided into three broad groups: granulocytes, Lymphocytes and monocytes .

The continuous process of blood cell formation takes place in hematopoietic tissue. In the developing embryo, the first site of blood formation is yolk sac. Later in embryonic life, the liver become the most important red blood cell forming organ, but it is soul succeeded by the bone.
