Answer:transitive verbs are those which have an object while intransitive verbs have no direct object

Explanation:  what's this direct and indirect object?

for example  :    a sentence reads as"  I like toys ." ask the question ...what to the verb like   that is: like --what?  the answer is: like toys   here the word toys is the direct object

That is to say the word like is taking the action directly to the noun toys

 Now look at this sentence:

I gave the toys to the child..... gave what.... the toys   ( direct object).......   to whom?  the child( indirect  object to the verb gave )

Now say we have a sentence as ....I gave  the child .....  then too the child is the indirect object  of the verb gave ... because you give something ...right?  and then that something to somebody    but never say I gave      what?..... the child.... That is wrong   In a way we get to learn that mostly in animate things are the direct object of the verb to give in any tense
