Long distance transport of substances in plants (Translocation):
Long distance transport of substances in a plant cannot occur by diffusion alone as diffusion is a slow process.
Water, minerals and food are generally transported by bulk flow system.
Bulk movement of substances from one point to another occurs as result of pressure differences between two points.
Bulk flow is achieved either through a positive hydrostatic pressure gradient (e.g. a garden hose) or a negative hydrostatic pressure gradient (e.g. suction through a straw).
Bulk movement of substances through vascular tissues of plants is called translocation.
Xylem is associated with translocation of water and minerals from roots to aerial parts of plant.
Phloem translocates food mainly from leaves to other parts of plant.
