Long distance transport of substances in plants (Translocation):

 Long distance transport of substances in a plant cannot occur by diffusion alone as diffusion is a  slow process.

 Water, minerals and food are generally transported by bulk flow system.

 Bulk movement of substances from one point to another occurs as result of pressure differences between two points.

 Bulk flow is achieved either through a positive hydrostatic pressure gradient (e.g. a garden hose) or a negative hydrostatic pressure gradient (e.g. suction through a straw).

 Bulk movement of substances through vascular tissues of plants is called translocation.

 Xylem is associated with translocation of water and minerals from roots to aerial parts of plant.

 Phloem translocates food mainly from leaves to other parts of plant.
