In the early medieval period, each ruling dynasty had its own area of influence but they kept striving for greater territorial acquisition and more wealth. One was lucrative and much coveted area was Kannauj and towards the end of the 8th century, there were three powers in India- The Palas, The Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas- who fought with each other in order to get control over the Kannauj region which continued for over more than 200 years and the struggle reached its logiacl end in the 9th century with Pratiharas emerging as victorious.

This constant rivalry of the threekingdoms is termed as tripartite struggle.
