tube well is a type of water well in which along 100–200 millimetres (3.9–7.9 in) wide stainless steel tube or pipe is bored into an underground aquifer. The lower end is fitted with a strainer, and a pump lifts water for irrigation. The required depth of the well depends on the depth of the water table.
The traditional and still most common
method of obtaining groundwater in rural
areas of the developing world is by means
of hand-dug wells (WATERAID 2008). With
the prior knowledge that groundwater is
present and rather close to the surface, a
hole is dug until the groundwater level is
reached. Inflowing groundwater is collected
and extracted with the help of pumps or
buckets. Given suitable geological
conditions, dug wells provide a low-tech
solution to the challenges of rural water
supply and can be implemented with a high
level of community participation and locally
available material and tools.
