It's universal adult franchise!.
It means right to vote must be given to all adult citizens(18 or more than 18) without the discrimination of class , caste , gender, creed,religion . It is based on equality and is basic principle of democracy. As for a country to be called democratic , it must follow this principle.and also as it represents citizens needs without any inequality, so most countries prefer it. That's the reason it is important .
There are many countries which do not follow it because these are the countries which do not follow democratic form of government too.
So, Though many countries claim that they are democratic but actually they are not
