One interesting characteristic of earthworms is their diet. They are decomposers, which means they eat decaying organic material and then return the chemicals back to the soil after digesting them. Earthworms literally eat dirt, along with all the materials in dirt, and in the process, they make the soil richer and more fertile. Another interesting feature is their skin. Earthworms don't have lungs. Instead, they breathe through their skin, pulling in oxygen from the air in the soil and then circulating it through their bodies using their heart. In addition, earthworms have to stay moist, so their skin actually lets out a mucus-like liquid. It coats their skin, keeping them moist and allowing them to move easily through the soil.
