Atomic weight is measured in atomic mass units (amu), also called daltons. ... measured in terms of the atomic mass unit, which is defined to be 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12, or 1.660538921 × 10−24 gram.

Unified mass u

It has been selected as "u" as the unit of measuring atomic mass. It is equivalent to one-twelfth of an atom of Carbon - 12 isotope. But, initially, it was selected as one-sixteenth of an atom of Oxygen as,

  • Oxygen reacted with many elements to form compounds, and
  • Oxygen gave relative masses on whole numbers.

Moreover, 1 u = 1.66 × 10^-27 kg.
