any vector of magnitude 1 and with a arbitrary direction is called unit vector.

it is simply represents the particular pointing direction

for example:- if  you have to represent x axis direction,

                      you simply denotes i {cap}.

for y axis and z axis you may denote,  j{cap} and k{cap} respectively.

whatever the direction of given vector, the direction of unit vector is in that direction.
