The constellation Ursa Major contains the group of stars commonly called the Big Dipper. The handle of the Dipper is the Great Bear's tail and the Dipper's cup is the Bear's flank. The Big Dipper is not a constellation itself, but an asterism, which is a distinctive group of stars.

The most famous constellations which we can see during the summer times in the early part of the night is called as Ursa Major.

It is also called as Saptarishi, great bear or big dipper ( used for drinking water in ancient times ).

This is a constellation of seven prominent stars It appears on sky like a big ladle, there are four star in the bowl and three star in the handle of ladle.

It preserve us the internal knowledge of Vedas. They are :

  • Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Metres, Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, Mariachi, Vasishtha, Angoras, Atri, Kratu, Pulaha, Pulastya.

It is called as Saptarshi because it was associated with seven well known ancient Indian sages, and all the seven sages form this Saptarshi.

Ursa major appears to move in the sky from east-west, but it's shape remain's same.

We can also locate the pole star by Ursa major , because it moves around the pole star, as like as earth revolve around the sun.
