The first day of Magh Bihu is known as Uruka.

  • Magh Bihu is a harvest festival commemorated in Assam, North-East India, which denotes the end of harvesting season in the month of Magh which is from January to February.
  • A bonfire known as Meji is lit for the conventional conclusion and prayer to the God of Fire. The festival evolved from the Tibeto-Burman and Indo-Aryan cultures and celebrations of the Magan of Kachari.
  • The festival is inscribed by feasts and bonfires. Young people assemble makeshift huts, known as Meji and Bhelaghar, from bamboo, leaves and thatch, and in Bhelaghar they consume the food ready for the feast and then burn the huts the following morning.
  • The celebrations also caption conventional Assamese games such as likely Bonga (pot-breaking) and buffalo fighting.
