Glycerine is used as a mounting medium i.e. a medium in which a biological specimen is mounted for preservation or display.

(After staining and before examination, sections should be mounted under the coverslip with a suitable mounting medium.)

Using mounting medium such as glycerine facilitates ease of handling and storage and prevents damage to the section. The medium protects the section from dust and damage. It also preserves the cell characteristics and quality of the stain. In addition, glycerine has long term chemical stability.
