what is valency ?

an elements valency is the number of hydrogen atoms which can combine with or replace one of the elements atoms is called valency . for example: oxygen has 6 electrons but it's valency is 2.​

see..it may be a little confusing for you but try to understand

valency is a measure of the combining capacity of an element.....see an element, let's say carbon has 6 electronsy or we can say it's atomic number is 6....an element should have 2, 8 or 18 electrons to balnce it self and because carbon has only 6 electrons, it needs 2 electrons more to balance it self....so if I ask you how many more atoms does carbon needs? so what will u say...of course 2.....and what is two 2 is the valency of carbon......thus we can say that the measure of the combining of an element is carbon
