Answer:

Valency is the number of electrons which can be combined in the last shell of an atom of any element to make that shell complete.

For example:- Chlorine

Atomic Number - 17

Electronic configuration - 2,8,7

Now in the last shell, there are 7 electrons. Therefore, valency of Chlorine would be 1....because 1 electron is required to make the atom complete. Special cases, like in phosphorous, valency can be 3,5 (Atomic number of phosphorus: 15). Refer to the attachment for the valency of first 18 elements

Valnce electron : Number of electrons which are present in the last shell of an atom. Like in Chlorine, electronic configuration is 2,8,7. Therefore, the valency electrons in 7.
