The combing capacity of an element is marked as its valency . Also , it can be calculated by solving the electronic configuration of an atom of element . The valence electrons thus obtained is the valency . Sometimes the valence electrons exceed the no. 4 , in this case valency can be find out by subtracting valence electrons with 8 .
Example:-
oxygen = 2,6 :- here valency is (8-6)= 2
lithium = 2,1 :- here valency is 1

Answer:

The valency of an element is the number of hydrogen atoms that can combine with or replace (either directly or indirectly) one atom of the element. ... For example, oxygen has six valence electrons, but its valency is 2. Some elements may have more than one combining power (or valency), while others have just one.
