Valency is the ability of an atom to give or recieve electrons in order to complete the number of electrons in their outer shells
But while writing chemical formulas, it is more often known as the power of the atom to form bonds and compounds with other atoms.

Valency is defined as the combining capacity of an atom.
It is also defined as the number of electrons gained or lost by an atom to reach to the state of octeit.
For example:- Oxygen has its electronic as 2,5
Therefore valency of oxygen is 3 as it gains 3 electrons to be stable.
