In 1950, it was started by K. M. Munshi, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Food at that time. It was started to create awareness in the mind of the people for the conservation of forests and planting of new trees. Van Mahotsava is celebrated as a festival of life.

Van mahotsav festival was started in 1950 by Dr K M Munshi, then the Union minister for Agriculture and Food to create enthusiasm among masses for forest conservation and planting trees.

It is celebrated in almost all parts of India, but usually begins between 1st July to 7th July.
