The van 't Hoff factor (named after J. H. van 't Hoff) is a measure of the effect of a solute upon colligative properties such as osmotic pressure, relative lowering in vapor pressure, elevation of boiling point and freezing point depression.

Answer:

  • Van’t Hoff factor is correction term which is used to calculate number of particle actually present in the solution, if solute is undergoing association or dissociation.
  • i = 0 for non-electrolyte and it is  i > 0 for solute undergoing dissociation and i < 0 for solute undergoing association.
