Sometimes the resistance is adjusted at preset value as required at the time of circuit building by adjusting screw attached to it and sometimes resistance can be adjusted as when required by controlling knob connected to it.

Answer:

Explanation:

Variable resistance (Rheostat) :-

It is a device which is used to change the resistance in the circuit due which the current flowing through the circuit will change.

  • Different components of an electric circuit, ammeter, voltmeter like bulb, torch bulb, nichrome wire have different resistance, therefore flow of current will be different in the different components.
  • Motion of electrons in the electric circuit constitutes an electric current. The electrons are not completely free to move within the conductor. They are held by the attractive forces of the atoms in which they move.
  • Motion of electrons is retarted  by resistance.
  • A good conductor offers a low resistance.
  • A component of electricity that offers a high resistance is a poor conductor.
  • An insulator offers a maximum resistance and does not allow current to flow.
