variance measures how far a data set is spread out.the smallest a variance get its zero,it can be infinite with the numbers in the millions or billions.
for example to find out variance for a population:
1.find the mean(the average)
2.subtract the mean from each number in the data set.
3.then square the result.(the result are squared to make the negatives positive.otherwise the negatives would cancel out the positives in the next step)
4.average the squared differences.
when you calculate variance for a sample,divide by the sample size minus 1 (n-1)when calculating the average squared difference in the step 4 above.
