Varna system is the heirarchical classification of society into four categories namely the Brahamana, the Kshatriya ,the Vaishya and the shudra. The system assigns occupation to each Varna which is rigid and hence, can not be intermixed.

Brahamanas are supposed to know the Shatras, the Vedas, survive on alms, guide the kings etc. .

The kshatriyas are to be engaged in warfare, conduct yagya, know the vedas, maintain law and order.

Vaishyas too should know vedas, and engage in trade and the Shudras would serve the above three categories.

What really went wrong with the Indian varna system?

What is the difference between Varna and caste?

What good did varna system do to the society before it was corrupted into caste system. What if the varna system did not exist?

The varna system is a social categorisation of professional duties according to the Vedic process of personal evolution and community cooperation.

It is based on guna and karma, that is individual qualities (tendencies, interests, capabilities, mentality, preferences etc) and activities (skills, experience, training, actual engagement, professinalism, etc).

The connection of varnas with the family or community of birth is only a matter of tradition as well as support and guidance from qualified elders all along ones' life.

The problem is in unqualified elders, who have degraded or broken the trad

I have answered this question in Quora earlier also but would like to answer in brief once again:

Varna system or varn vyavastha as it is called was prevalent in the Vedic era .It is like professionalism ie you become a teacher , a defence personnel ,a businessman or a helper depending upon your qualifications and other capabilities .

Just as it is not necessary that a teachers son becomes a teacher or a defense personnel son becomes a defense personnel …….he is free to take up any profession in accordance with his qualification and capabilities .

I really doubt whether the concept of VARN is correctly understood. People always consider caste or religion and sometimes equates this to VARN. Other someone equates this to the work done by person. NO! VARN is different. Every person is separate individual. Caste (jaati) is some thing which got documented and declared which may not correct. You would always surprised to see someone documented shudra but clever , documented as kshatriya but timid, documented as vaishya but not in business , documented as brahman but not so clever. This uniqueness of a person can be proved by VARN which is pre

The Kshatriya, the nobility or ruling class.

The Vaishya, the merchants and farmers.

The Shudras or servants.

These four orders of society were called "varna", which has two meanings; first it means "color"; and second it means a "veil". As color it d

There are many books composed in North India especially from the areas drained by the Ganga and Yamuna, at this period the books were oftenly called as later vedic, because they were composed after the rigveda.

These were including the samaveda, yajurveda and atharvaveda. These were composed by the priests.

There were many different groups of people in the society at that time namely priests, warriors, farmers, herders, traders, crafts persons, labourers, fishing folk and the forest people….etc.

The priests divided people into four groups called varnas.
