Vegetative propagation is a form of asexual reproduction of a plant, where only one plant is involved and the offspring is the result of the same parent plant. The new plant is genetically identical to the parent.
Steps to perform Layering -
1. A young, healthy, pliable shoot growing low on the plant is to be selected.
2. The soil where the shoot will be buried is to be loosened and a shallow hole is to be dug in the prepared area.
3. With a sharp knife, a cut is to be made where the shoot will touch the soil; lay it in the hole and fasten it down with a piece of wire or a forked stick.
4. The hole is to be filled in, firming the soil around the layer. A rock or brick can be placed on top to help hold the layer in place.
5. After a few months, gently dig into the soil to check whether the roots have formed, after which the new plant is to be cut free from the parent.
